Running Stitch family Embroidery / Sampler of running stitch family

 Hi all

Hope all are doing well.  My step in learning embroidery is in my grade 6.  We have 2 classes per week for sewing.  The first piece I have stitched using needle and thread is for a hand kerchief where our madam taught some basic stitches.  And the first stitch I have learned is running stitch and we made a border out of holbein stitch.  At that time I didn't know the name for holbein stitch.  We have been taught it as running stitch only.

As I started exploring the internet I came across Sarah's excellent site and started learning the stitches one by one.  After seeing various stitch samplers I wanted to make one for me and started from the running stitch family.  I have stitched all the stitches in a straight line.  So far I have completed four family of stitches from sarah's dictionary.

Today I am happy to share with you the stitches from the running stitch family.  Here I have stitched 15 different stitches.  Have a look at the running stitch family.

In the next picture I have given the name of the stitches along with it.   Next to interlaced running stitch is again the same stitch with two colours of interlacing.

I trying to design a hoop design out these stitches.  Will post it once done.  Hope all of you like this post.  I will be back tomorrow with the kantha embroidery design that includes kantha butti which I have posted yesterday.  Till then, have a nice time with your needle and thread.

Embroidery Design - Holbein Stitch

 Hi all

Hope all are doing well.  Today I am happy to share with you a simple and new embroidery design that uses Holbein Stitch. Holbein Stitch is double running stitch.

Tutorial for Holbein stitch is here.

I have stitched a geometrical design that uses  three colours on a dark blue colour poplin cotton.  Now onto the design.

I have drawn the design on a 10 lines per inch graph paper. You can also stitch in even weave fabric such as aida.

Pattern for the design

Thread colours - Anchor embroidery floss
----------------------------------------------------------
Red - 6578
Cream - 300
Orange - 330
I used 3 strands for all the colours.

Back in 2013 I have done a lunch towel project using this stitch.  You can view it here.

You can view other stitch tutorials and its designs here.

Tomorrow I will share the tutorial for Holbein stitch.  I am also working on a neck pattern using this stitch.  Once completed I will upload it.

Lunch towels

After learning to do embroidery I wanted to do something for my kids.  But for boys what can I do.  I made two pillow covers with their names in it.  Some time back I have got blue coloured aida fabric and from that time onwards I was urging to do a lunch towel for my boys.  So decided to go for a simple embroidery on both the sides.  The first one I have come up with the Holbein stitch and got the idea from Anchor needle and thread magazine.  Here it comes:

Here is the close up.

The two lines are double running stitch forward in blue and reverse in red.  It is a 10 count aida fabric.  So, Four strands of anchor cotton embroidery thread have been used.
In my next post I will be showing one more lunch towel with kasuti borders on both the sides.  So do watch my space.
